Your home should be a reflection of what moves you, what delights you, and what makes you think. It should be filled with things that bring you joy and comfort, spark curiosity, incite peace and calm, or at the very least, make you smile. And if a piece of art doesn’t do any of those things? Get rid of it. No seriously, this weekend, take it off the wall and donate it, sell it, gift it (or just hide it in a closet until you’re ready to fully let go). Create space to imagine what you'd really love to see in its place.
Too often, we hang on to things simply because they’re there. A mass-produced canvas from a home goods store…a trendy piece we loved 10 years ago but sort of cringe when we look at it today…a generic landscape gifted by a relative…a painting we spent way too much on because someone told us the artist was a big deal, but we’ve never really loved it…a print we bought in a rush because the wall looked too empty when we first moved in. But here’s the truth: a blank wall is always better than boring art.
Think about it—when you fill your space with things that don’t inspire you, you’re not just cluttering your walls, you’re cluttering your mind. Worse, you’re leaving no room for the art that truly speaks to you when you eventually stumble upon it. If your walls are already covered in things you don’t care about, where will you put the piece that makes your heart race?
We’ve all heard the idea: If it’s not a hell yes, it’s a hell no. Lately, I often hear this said regarding how we spend our time. Couldn't agree more with that sentiment! Time is valuable, invest it well. Let's add to that, though! Consider the things we surround ourselves with. This idea should apply to everything you bring into your home, especially the art you live with every day.
So take a look around. If your walls are covered in art you don’t love—truly love—take it down. Sit with the blank space for a while. Let it breathe. The right piece will come, and when it does, you’ll have room for it. Until then, embrace the beauty of an empty wall. It’s full of possibility.
